New Renault Twingo concept confirmed Latest clues to the new Twingo will be given with a concept car at the Monaco GP in May

Renault will reveal a new concept car at the Monaco grand prix in May that will preview the new Renault Twingo.

The concept follows the electric Twin’Z concept car, which was unveiled in Milan earlier in the month. It will also be seen at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, alongside the Renault Twizy F1.

The latest concept, also likely to be called Twin, is the latest in a series of ‘life-cycle’ concepts from design chief Laurens van den Acker. The Twingo-previewing model is based around the theme ‘Play’.

The new Twingo has been developed by Renault with partner Mercedes-Benz, who will spawn a replacement for the Smart Fortwo and Forfour from the project.

The new concept has already been spied while filming a promotional video in Madrid. It is believed to use a rear-mounted engine driving the rear wheels.

This unusual layout is also appropriate for a new small Renault because the company had a long history of building small, rear-engined, cars, including the Dauphine, Caravelle and classic Renault 8.

While the Twin’Z hints at an electrically powered version of the new model, this racy concept caught here in Spain seems to have been inspired by the Renault 8 Gordini, with the signature quad spot lamps a big giveaway.

Also caught at this publicity shoot was a Renault 5 Turbo II, a mid-engined, rear-drive hatch based on the 5 supermini, which was undoubtedly another historical inspiration for Renault.
