Turin design students create Mercedes SL shooting brake, replacing the folding hard top with a coupe roofline - StudioTorino approves
Automotive design students in Turin have designed an arresting shooting brake variant of the latest SL, replacing the car’s folding aluminium hardtop with a tapering coupé roofline.
The project, overseen by Steffan Koehl, head of Mercedes Global Advanced Design, follows the recent trend for shooting brakes evidenced by the Ferrari FF, Mercedes CLS and a number of eccentric motorshow concepts.
Named ‘Coupetorino 2013’, the design study was backed by Studiotorino, who have in the past created limited-edition versions of the Porsche Boxster and Cayman S, as well as a touring variant of the Maserati Quattroporte, predictably called the ‘Cinqueporte’.
A 1:4 scale model of the CoupeTorino was recently presented to members of Mercedes’ management at the company’s Advanced Design Center in Como. However, the project has been solely for educational purposes and neither Studiotorino nor Mercedes will take it further.
StudioTorino’s most recent production project is the Cayman S-based Moncenisio, which is currently available for €135,000, excluding a donor car.
