Lexus is planning a performance variant of its forthcoming IS coupé, which is expected to become the second model to carry the IS-F badge.
The V8-engined Lexus IS-F coupé model can be indentified by bulging wheel arches, a front bumper influenced by the Lexus LFA supercar, a deeply sculpted rear bumper and a small intake in the bonnet.
Large brake discs and two sets of diagonally stacked tailpipes are further clues to the Lexus IS-F coupé’s performance potential. The car was snapped testing alongside a BMW M3 coupé, a model thought to be considered the benchmark.
The interior is largely unchanged from that of the saloon, although this development mule appears not to feature the saloon’s infotainment display.
Although no technical details have been announced, it is likely the new car will carry a version of the IS-F’s saloon’s 5.0-litre V8. That engine develops 417bhp and 372lb ft, fed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The standard coupé will be based on the Lexus IS saloon’s platform and will likely mirror that model’s engine line-up. The coupé's styling has been directly influenced by the LF-LC concept, shown at the 2012 Detroit motor show.
Lexus bosses have previously voiced concerns that the brand needs more exciting models. While the LFA has done much to raise the profile of the brand, a sports coupé is seen as a model to further change perceptions and reach a younger audience.
