The Toyota Yaris will be turned into a quasi-race car at the Frankfurt motor show with this new Yaris Hybrid-R concept.
Based on a three-door Yaris, the new road-going concept is designed to preview higher performance hybrids with greater driver involvement.
It mixes a Toyota Motorsport-designed 1.6-litre petrol engine and two electric motors for a combined power output of more than 400bhp.
Using technology gleaned from Toyota’s TS030 Hybrid Le Mans racer, energy recovered from braking is stored in a super-capacitor and quickly fed back into the powertrain to provide a boost similar to forced induction.
Toyota notes a super-capacitor is “suitable for use in a sports car”, and its technology that’s been linked with appearing in a high-performance version of the GT86.
