Toyota has set a 7m22s lap of the Nürburgring, breaking its own record
Toyota Motorsport has smashed its previous Nürburgring electric lap record set in August with an time of 7:22:329.
Driver Jochen Krumbach piloted the all-electric EV P002 round the infamous “Green Hell” to better the team’s previous effort by 25 seconds. The race car is capable of reaching speeds up to 158mph.
The TMG team attributes its success to its pioneering battery recharging technology which allows them to power up an electric race car without access to a mains power grid.
The technology – developed in partnership with battery specialists Schneider Electric - consists of a 42kw lithium ion battery initially charged from the mains and then mounted into the back of a Toyota Hiace van.
Once harnessed into a ‘Quick Charger’, the setup is capable of recharging a vehicle quickly without the need for mains power.
Toyota says this is “a major step forward for electric motorsport” and one which should allow teams greater flexibility to keep cars running on track.
